Summer Musings

I have a few minutes this morning to blog and cyberloaf ..

posting the storm photo I took last night, which is really cool, got the lightening in the center of the cloud.. but I had to take a lot and stand out in the rain,, but that is Ok..

and also,, I guess I am getting old,, for some reason I thought the Moonwalk 40th anniversary was the same week as Woodstock,, but actually Moonwalk was in July 16-- and one month later Woodstock: which I did not attend and I only know of one person, Larry Williams who for sure did attend. I was out visiting Neil Crabtree in California during Woodstock, my first time in Monterey, California

so onto the photos last night, and as the date for Woodstock 40th, I will gather up photos that I like,, and maybe some music. I especially like that Jimi Hendrix performed Izabella, one the few songs that actually has my name in it--Ha!

anyway.

Wild times in the neighborhood-July 2009

My better boy tomatoesMs. Bunny eating her clover.. :) in the front yard

Tom cat,, prowling for birds, bunnies,,lol, chipmonks and mice (Left)
Tom chilling after eating his Friskies. (Right)

Ok, I am not into celebrating this year for a lot of reasons,, which why the link is Teaparty for the July 4th, also heard that if you traveling in Virginia,, bring your own potty and extra bladder because they have closed half and barricaded the rest centers..I suppose under the guise of security.. give me a break! Pity Grandpa and Grandma and kids trying to see family to celebrate the July 4th! Of course if real fiscal responsibility reigned in this state.. the rest center would be open later,, all restrooms clean and available to pay for the constant VDOT construction in the state to bolter tourism.. won't get into that right now.. but realistically,, closing the rest centers along the interstate does not say much for the state of Virginia.. ok enough ranting check this out..

BlueBerry Crisp from Martha Stewart's Living Mag

Someone put me on the Martha Steward mag mailing list,, and half heartedly read the colorfully decorated Magazine covered with Spring things and to my surprise I found one the simplest best recipes for Blueberry Crisp I have ever seen--I don't talk much about it on my blog but I still love to cook and secondly bake:
Serves 6: This crisp has a loose and juicy filling. If you would prefer thicker filling add an extra teaspoon of cornstarch.
Filling: 6 cups (3 pints) blueberries; 1/2 cup sugar; 1 tble cornstarch; 1 tsp fresh lemon juice;
1/4 tsp coarse salt.
Topping: 3/4 cup all purpose flour; 1/2 cup rolled oats (or chopped nuts--your choice);
1/2 tsp baking powder; 1/2 tsp coarse salt; 3 oz (6 Tble) unsalted butter, softened; and 1/2 cup sugar.
Preheat oven to 375, Make filling. Mix blueberries etc as listed in a bowl. Transfer to square bakcing dish. Cream butter and sugar and salt in mixer until pale and fluffy. Stir the dry ingredients (flour, oats or nuts) into butter with hands or hand whisk.
Sprinkle the topping evenly over the filling. Bake until bubbling in center and brown on top-
about an hour. Cool for 30 minutes before serving.
WOW! I will try this with fresh peaches too.. bet it is just as good.. dieters .. instead of Breyer's Vanilla try Cool Whip, non fat ..happy Spring.

Memorial Day Tribute to my Father

Photo to left, Dad in Germany relaxing with some of his Army buddies drinking a beer,, The Great Musto :) look at the mustache !!
Photo to the right,, not sure where or when taken,, he was in the Battle of Normandy, France, Italy but I suspect it was taken in Korea in the early 60s since he had no mustache then-- and appears older about the time he went to Korea in 1961. I didn't know it snowed there like that! So anyway, perhaps I can figure it out, I have very few photos of him,, he hated to have his picture taken.. and didn't say much about his military life. What I know, I found in his papers long after he died.
